Brief on department

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences was founded in 2001. At present, the Department has six disciplines, namely, Economics, English, management, Psychology, Sociology and Women’s Studies. Its faculty offers a B.A.(Hons.) programme in Economics, Sociology and Psychology from 2012 and also providing wide spectrum of courses at the B.Tech. And Ph. D. levels.

The undergraduate program of study is intended to teach students to think critically and creatively, to conceptualize and solve problems, to analyze, reason and arrive at evidence-based conclusions, and to express themselves clearly and convincingly both in speech and in writing. In addition, the program of study will encompass a combination of courses designed to promote the acquisition of certain skills that students can bring to bear in a variety of learning and career/ professional situations.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences plays a unique role in an institute where the ethos of science and technology prevails. It is believed that engineering and science are, by their very nature, humanistic and socially derived enterprises. Hence a complete science and technology education must include Humanities and social sciences and  other behavioral sciences where the students unites application of scientific principles along with human, moral and social understanding.

The undergraduate courses taught to B.Tech. Students aim at making them aware of the various issues concerning man and society. They are meant to sensitize students to the broader social, cultural, economic, ethical and humane issues involved in social change.  These courses aim at cultivating critical mind and analytical capabilities.

Department has Started the Ph.D. programme in the Economics, English, Psychology Sociology,  and Women’s Studies disciplines with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary topics. The department has excellent opportunities and facilities for the pursuit of research in Humanities and social sciences.

An institute level facility, the Department has its own Library and Computer Labs. Xeroxing and other infrastructure facilities are also made available to the students. The Department possesses well-equipped Language Laboratory and Psychology Laboratory. For the fulfillment of its teaching and research goals, the Department has competent faculty members with a high degree of excellence who keep pace with the current developments in their fields of specialization.
