During his tenure as DG & CEO, FIEO, the membership of the organisation increased from 7,200 to over 16,000 in last five years. Shri Sahai was earlier Joint DGFT in the Policy Division of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade where he played a key role in the formulation of the Foreign Trade Policy from 1996 to 2003. He was a key member of Government of India delegation to Australia, Singapore, Philippines, Denmark, Turkey and Europe on Export Facilitation which led to streamlining of exports documents & recommended EDI connectivity within a specified time frame to reduce transaction cost and time.Besides this Mr. Ajay is a captivating speaker who enthralled the audience at Jaypee Business School. He started the lecture by giving the students a brief overview of Indian economy and the current macroeconomic climate where the major upheaval is being caused by the drastic fall in Global Oil Prices ( 46$/barrel) because USA became a net exporter of Oil due to the Shale gas discoveries. He then spoke about some of the major reasons why India is primed to be the next economic powerhouse and will be the only country that will grow at 5% per year for the next 30 years. Some of the reasons cited were, vibrant democratic environment, a young demography, inexpensive currency, liberal FDI policy etc.
He re-iterated India's ambitious long term vision is to double its share of trade in the world by 2022 to 2.5 trillion USD.The audience also learnt about sectors which are identified as high potential sectors for export such as Auto-components, Pharmaceuticals, electronic hardware, automobile, biotechnology, food processing, textiles and gems and jewellery. The speaker also noted India has taken a unique path towards development where it moved from a predominantly agri-based economy to a services dominated economy without going trough a Manufacturing phase. For the growth to be sustainable he highlighted that it is important for India to grow its manufacturing base as well.He shed some light upon the services sector saying that tourism, transportation and logistics and the traditional mainstays such as IT and Financial services will be the main drivers of the growth in the services sector. He also touched upon the legal process outsourcing, R&D and education as the new growth sectors which will drive the services industry forward in the years to come. After adroitly answering questions from the audience he concluded by highlighting the importance of becoming an entrepreneur and urged the students to become a job-generator rather than a mere job-seeker. The satiated students gave him a standing ovation although knowing in their ignited hearts that he deserved a lot more.
