Title:Issues with Computer
Science Education in India
India produces more
than one million graduates in Computer Science and related
disciplines every year, and yet, the industry keeps complaining
about lack of skilled manpower. A vast majority of these graduates
will not get jobs that they are supposedly trained for, and
yet, those who will get jobs will have a salary higher than
in many other engineering disciplines. A combination of high
salary and high unemployment can only mean one thing - most
of the students are getting very poor quality of education.
The quality of research output of the country in Computer
Science also leaves much to be desired. While we have seen
rise of service industry in the past two decades, we are yet
to see any significant traction in software products industry.
There are several reasons for the state of affairs, starting
from policy and regulation in higher education, rigidity in
curriculum and pedagogy, inability to leverage technology,
lack of leadership at different levels, to name just a few.
And yet, there is a hope for the bright future. Not only are
the problems solvable, but there is also a hope that technology
will help deliver quality computer science education to larger
number of people.
