Laboratory

Department offers two laboratory courses in Physics at undergraduate level and two laboratory courses in Material Science & Engineering at postgraduate level. The laboratory courses cover the experiments which are of direct relevance to the students of Material Science & Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, IT, Electronics, Biotechnology. The experiments cover the following topics:

 

M.Tech
Materials- Polymer, Ceramics, Metals. Alloys, Composites, Nanomaterials, Biomaterials

 

Materials Synthesis- Synthesis of different materials by chemical, solid state etc methods 

 

Material analysis- Microstructure analysis, Structure by X-ray diffraction

 

Material characterization:

  1. Optical characterization: Absorption Spectroscopy in UV-VIS and IR region, Emission Spectroscopy
  2.  Electrical Characterization: Electrical conductivity, Impedence measurement, Dielectric constant,
  3.  Magnetic Characterization: Magneto resistance, Magnetic Susceptibility, Hysterisis, Magneto optic rotation, Magnetostriction.

Experiments in M. Tech Level

  1. Microstructure analysis of different type of samples (Metals, Ceramics & Polymers)
  2. Determination of band gap of unknown semiconductor material using four probe technique
  3. Determination of carrier density, mobility and type of semiconductor Using  Hall Effect
  4. To study the Dielectric behavior of materials with varying temperature
  5. To study magneto-striction of materials using Michelson Interferometer and laser beam
  6. Structure determination using X-ray diffraction pattern
  7. Characteristics of  P-N junction diode with varying temperature.
  8. Measurement of magneto-resistance of semiconductor materials
  9. To study the characteristics of an optical fiber
  10. Synthesis and characterization of ceramic materials
  11. Synthesis and characterization of nano-particles
  12. Synthesis and characterization of polymer materials
  13. Measurement of average grain size in microstructures using optical microscope
  14. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility of magnetic materials

Laboratory is well equipped with latest scientific equipment for experiments on above topics.

Experiments in B. Tech level:

  1. To determine the wavelength of  sodium light with the help of Newton’s rings.
  2. To determine the wavelength of sodium light by using Fresnel’s Bi-Prism.
  3. To determine the specific rotation of cane sugar solution by using Polarimeter.
  4. To determine the dispersive power of material of prism by spectrometer.
  5. To determine the wavelength of different spectral lines by spectrometer with the      help of diffraction grating.
  6. To study photo-electric effect and determine the Plank’s constant (h).
  7. To determine the resistance per unit length of bridge wire and specific resistance of material of the given wire using Carey Foster’s bridge.
  8. To study the variation of magnetic field along the axis of Helmholtz galvanometer.
  9. Study of the properties of Optical Fiber and determination of numerical aperture, attenuation coefficient etc (experiment I-V as per the manual).
  10. Determination of band-gap of a semiconductor by using four probe technique.
  11. Determination of Susceptibility of paramagnetic liquid by using Quinck’s tube.
  12. Determination of e/m (charge mass ration) of electron by using Thompson’s method.
  13. Study of Hall Effect and determination of allied coefficients.
  14. Study of variation of dielectric constant with temperature.
  15. To determine the wavelength of laser light using diffraction grating.
  16. Study of the magnetostricition by using optical technique.
  17. Study of V-I characteristics of different diodes.
