Prof. P. M. Shankar

  • P. M. Shankar received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics from Kerala University (India), Masters in Applied Optics and Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. After spending some time at the University of Sydney, Australia as a visiting scholar, he joined Drexel in 1982. He has developed several graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of fiberoptic communications and an undergraduate course in wireless communications. He was the recipient of the 2005-2006 Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in the University. He has published a textbook Introduction to Wireless Systems, John Wiley & Sons, 2001. In April 2006, he was featured in 60 Seconds With…Authors Edition, an interview-style Q & A segment on Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing’s website. The interview showcased 100 IOP authors who have published papers that were key to the advancement of physics research in their particular subject area. His latest book is Fading and Shadowing in Wireless Systems by Springer.

    Dr. Shankar has put together new MS programs in Telecommunications Engineering (ECE department), and in Software Engineering (a joint program of the Colleges of Engineering, Arts & Sciences and Information Science and Technology). He also developed a BS in Software Engineering program, jointly with the College of Information Science and Technology and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences. In addition, he setup a practical training program for all MS students in the College of Engineering (Career Integrated Education). He also set up the on-line MSEE program in the ECE department. He served as the Assistant Department and Graduate Advisor (ECE Department) from 1993 to 1997 & 1999 to 2004, the Director of Graduate Programs (COE) from 1996 to 2000 and Interim Department Head (ECE department) from 2006 to 2007.
