Research Highlights

Dr. Kaur is fundamentally anchored in labor economics, with a distinct emphasis on the dynamics of rural employment and the economic challenges faced by marginalized communities. Through academic and consultancy work, she has sought to illuminate the structural inequalities and barriers that impede equitable participation in the labor market, particularly for women and marginalized groups in rural areas.

Her doctoral research delved into the complexities of rural labor markets, specifically examining the employment pattern, quality and earnings of marginalized communities. It offers a critical re-evaluation of India’s Rural Non-Farm Sector (RNFS) by introducing a refined estimation approach that prioritizes the location of economic activity, addressing longstanding overestimations in employment data. The research also investigates RNFS linkages with rural poverty, employment quality, and spatial disparities.

In collaboration with the SOPPECOM, supported by the Ford Foundation, Dr. kaur was involved in investigating the structural violence against rural women in the context of agrarian distress. This research focused on understanding the multifaceted challenges that rural women face in agricultural settings, including economic exploitation and social marginalization. As part of a consultancy project with the Council for Social Development, she explored the economic inclusion of SCs and STs in rural labor markets. This study analyzed employment patterns, earnings disparities, and the effectiveness of current inclusion policies and provided a detailed picture of the socio-economic conditions and identified critical areas where policy interventions could promote equitable economic growth and inclusion.

Building on the foundation of RNFS research, current research work delves into the evolving complexities of the rural labour market with a focus on sustainable rural development. Key areas of enquiry include skill mismatch, enterprise innovation, and gendered labour dynamics to support evidence-based policies for inclusive skilling, innovation, and sustainable employment opportunities in rural India.
