Dr. Ashish Gupta

Biography

Dr. Ashish Gupta holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (System Dynamics and Control) from Delhi Technological University and an M.Tech in Manufacturing System Engineering from Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology.

With over 12 years of academic and research experience, he has made significant contributions to both teaching and innovation. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at IIT Roorkee, he led the development of intelligent UAV systems tailored for mining applications, in collaboration with the University of California, Irvine, and Old Dominion University, USA. Dr. Gupta has also held faculty positions at different institutions across the Delhi-NCR region, India. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Design at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT) in July 2025.

He has authored many research papers in SCI/Scopus-indexed journals and internationally recognized conferences. In addition, he has contributed as an editor of one book and authored a book chapter. Dr. Gupta also serves as a reviewer for several reputed international journals. His research interests lie in interdisciplinary domains, with a strong focus on the development of smart robotic systems for industrial, automotive, and biomedical applications.

Research Highlights

Dr. Ashish Gupta has made significant contributions to intelligent systems and multidisciplinary modeling through nationally and internationally collaborative research. He has developed intelligent UAV systems for mining surveillance through India–US collaborations involving Coal India (SECL) and academic partners in the United States. This work addressed critical challenges in large-scale mining operations by enabling aerial monitoring for safety, surveillance, and operational assessment. The outcomes of this collaborative research received national visibility and were highlighted by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, underscoring their industrial and strategic relevance. He has also engineered UAV platforms integrated with advanced imaging and sensing technologies for applications such as stockpile volume estimation and post-disaster hazard mapping, facilitating rapid and data-driven decision-making in complex environments.

In the area of ground vehicle systems, Dr. Gupta proposed and validated flexible-frame vehicle dynamics models that integrate human biodynamics to enhance ride comfort analysis in heavy commercial vehicles. He has designed and fabricated a quarter-car experimental test rig to evaluate semi-active suspension control strategies, with particular emphasis on advanced control techniques such as Model Predictive Control (MPC). This experimental platform enables realistic validation of control algorithms and bridges the gap between computational modeling and practical implementation.

He has extensively applied bond graph modeling techniques across mechanical, vehicular, aerial, and biomechanical systems, enabling unified multi-domain physical modeling. His interdisciplinary research approach integrates theory, experimentation, and international collaboration to advance smart systems for industrial, automotive, and biomedical applications.
