Dr. Varun Goel

Biography

Dr. Varun Goel is currently serving as an Assistant Professor (Senior Grade) in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT), Noida. He received his PhD in Electronics and Communication Engineering from JIIT in 2024, his M.Tech. in Microelectronics from IIT (BHU), Varanasi in 2014, and B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication from KIET, Ghaziabad (UPTU) in 2011. Dr Goel has over ten years of teaching and research experience at JIIT, where he has made significant contributions to curriculum design, laboratory development, and research supervision. His teaching portfolio covers Analogue Electronics, Digital Electronics, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, Signals & Systems, Control Systems, Electrical Sciences, Basic Electronics, Introduction to Microfabrication. His research is focused on the fabrication and characterization of optoelectronic devices, MOS transistor modeling, and spectrum-selective photodetection. He has co-authored numerous IEEE publications and book chapters. He has played key roles in organizing IEEE international conferences (ICSC series) and workshops, contributing as rapporteur, advertising coordinator, and committee member. Dr. Goel has qualified GATE (multiple times), UGC-NET, and CSIR-JRF (AIR 06). He has completed various certifications from IITs, Coursera, and Udemy.

Research Highlights

Dr. Goel’s research is primarily centred on the design and development of next-generation optoelectronic and spectrum-selective self-powered photodetectors. His doctoral work and subsequent research work emphasize the pyro-phototronic effect, hybrid heterojunctions, and CQD-based photodetection, contributing to the advancement of filter-free image sensing and low-power optoelectronics. He has demonstrated innovative device architectures such as modified Schottky contacts (Pd/MoOx) and hybrid heterojunctions (PQT-12 and CdSe CQDs), which have been published in leading journals like IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, and Nanoscale (RSC). Beyond device physics, Dr. Goel engages in modeling and simulation of advanced MOS transistors for nanoelectronics applications. His collaborative projects span international journal publications, book chapters, and IEEE conferences, enhancing both academic knowledge and potential industrial adoption in photodetector and sensor technologies. He has been actively involved in funded projects, large-scale laboratory setups at JIIT, and mentoring undergraduate research in IoT, machine learning in electronics, and semiconductor device modeling. His work holds direct implications in neuromorphic computing, low-cost UV sensing, and IoT-enabled monitoring systems, bridging the gap between academic research and industry applications.
