Physics and Material Science

Department Overview

Physics equips engineering students with the scientific understanding and analytical mindset needed to design, innovate, and solve problems that improve the world. Established in 2001, the Department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering (PMSE) at JIIT Noida combines rigorous teaching, advanced research, and expertise in quantum technologies, energy materials, nanomaterials, plasmonics, photonics, and high-energy physics. With strong national research presence, major funded projects, global collaborations, and award-winning faculty, PMSE stands as a leading hub for advanced education, research, and innovation. The PMSE department offers foundational and advanced physics and materials science courses across various branches including ECE, CSE, IT, Mathematics and Computing, VLSI, ACT, R and AI, and Biotechnology. The PMSE department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Physics for students seeking advanced knowledge and research-oriented skills.

The syllabi of PMSE courses is designed to develop the following important qualities and skills in the graduate students of various branches and postgraduate and doctoral students of PMSE department

Department Overview Key Points:

Thrust Areas of the Department
Both experimental and theoretical research works are going on in the Department. The experimental research is carried out on the synthesis, characterization and applications of advanced materials (nanomaterials, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, organic, diluted semiconducting, organized assemblies, conducting polymers, bio-molecules). In addition, experimental work is also done in the emerging area of quantum communication. The experimental research is supplemented by a strong theoretical group which works in different areas such as quantum optics, quantum information theory, spectroscopy, plasma physics, atomic, molecular and laser physics, nanostructures, thermoelectric and superconducting materials. The departmental research is broadly segregated into three research groups as below:
  • Quantum Optics and Quantum Information
  • Advanced Materials
  • Photonics and Plasmonics
Quantum Optics and Quantum Information

The group is involved with various facets of theoretical and experimental research in Quantum optics, Quantum information and communication. A number of experimental facilities in are added in the “Quantum cryptography lab”. The COW-QKD set up was deployed that was co-developed in collaboration of Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT), Delhi. In fact, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between JIIT, Noida and CDoT, Delhi for carrying forward this collaboration and explore the designing of new QKD setup as well as optimization of parameters for enhancement of key rates for large distances. Further, new experimental facilities such as single photon detector (SPD), time tagger, oscilloscope, workstation, spectrometer has been added to the lab. These new facilities would be utilized for generation of entangled photons for development of new QKD schemes and indigenous quantum random number generator. In addition to this, the group has been actively engaged into collaborations and discussions with many leading scientists and Post-Doctoral Fellows and PhD students from various places of the world.

This thrust area includes research on:

  • Quantum Optics
  • Quantum Computing
  • Quantum information and Communication
