The ICHSM 2026 pre-conference workshop, titled "Decoding the Desk Reject: Lessons from the Editor’s Chair," offered a strategic deep dive into the often-opaque world of academic publishing. Led by Dr. Radha Yadav, an Associate Editor at Management and Labour Studies and faculty member at IIM Ranchi, the session focused on the critical "gatekeeping" phase where manuscripts are rejected before reaching peer review. Dr. Yadav detailed that desk rejections are rarely about the data alone; they are frequently driven by a lack of "theoretical contribution," a poor fit with the journal’s specific aims and scope, or a failure to clearly articulate the research's "so what?" factor in the introduction and abstract. The workshop highlighted technical "red flags," such as outdated literature, inconsistent formatting, and weak methodological rigor, while providing a clear roadmap of the editorial workflow—from the initial Editor-in-Chief "vibe check" to the final technical screening. Ultimately, the session empowered researchers to view their submissions through an editor’s lens, emphasizing that success lies in aligning a paper’s unique novelty with the specific needs and standards of the target journal.
