BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Smriti Gaur, Assistant Professor (Senior Grade), joined the Department of Biotechnology in 2010. She did her graduation in Botany (Honours) and an advance certificate course of two year duration in Cell Biotechnology from Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra. She did her Masters in Applied Microbiology from Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Jiwaji University, Gwalior and was the college rank holder.

She did her PhD from JIIT, Noida where she isolated, characterized and purified proteases from plant and microbial sources. She has attended many international and national conferences and presented her research work both in India and abroad. She is presently focused in the area of Microbial biotechnology, Food microbiology and Enzyme technology.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

The broad area of my research is on Probiotics. My laboratory work currently focuses on isolation of novel strains of bacteria especially lactic acid bacteria from fermented foods which have not yet been explored for their microbial population. These bacteria are fast gaining importance in the global arena as probiotics for human use, and hence, new isolates may further help in the progress of probiotic research especially in clinical applications.  There is increasing evidence in favor of the claims of beneficial effects attributed to probiotics, including improvement of intestinal health, enhancement of the immune response, reduction of serum cholesterol, and cancer prevention. These health properties are strain specific.

Currently, research in my laboratory is focusing on evaluation of probiotic properties of bacterial isolates of various fermented foods. We aim to obtain novel isolates with potential probiotic properties. Further we plan to analyze these isolates for their anti-oxidative, anti-cholesteremic and anti-bacterial properties. Further, we plan to evaluate the health benefits of these bacteria isolates. We plan to further research on this area as regular use of probiotics in pure forms or in form of functional fermented foods could improve the quality of life and reduce the dependence on drugs having high cost and side effects.
