Department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering

The department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering offers courses in Physics and Materials Science to B.Tech students of ECE, CSE, IT and Biotech branches and  a two year M. Sc. program in Physics. The department has well equipped curricular and research laboratories with modern and state of the art equipments. The department also has Ph.D programme in research areas of Nanoscience and multifunctional Nanomaterials, Energy and  Advanced Functional Materials, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Photonics and Plasmonics, Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Optical Sensors, Vibrational Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Solid State Ionics, Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (Spintronics), Thermoelectric and Superconducting Materials and Laser Plasma Interaction and has produced 28 Ph.D. students and has published more than 500 research papers in high impact international journals and conferences. At present, 22 students are pursuing their Ph. D in the department in various fields of research. There are several funded research projects running in the department. The Ph.D. students graduated from the department have been successful in getting teaching positions in universities and colleges and prestigious international and national post-doctoral fellowship such as Japanese Society of Promotion of Science (JSPS, Japan), Kothari Fellowship of DST, and National Post-doctoral Fellowship of DST.

Research activities of the Department

Both experimental and theoretical research works are going on in the department. The experimental research is carried out on the synthesis, characterization and application of advanced materials (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, nanomaterials, organic, diluted semiconducting, organized assemblies, conducting polymers, bio-molecules).  The experimental research is supplemented by a strong theoretical group which works in different areas such as quantum optics, quantum information theory, spectroscopy, plasma physics, atomic, molecular and laser physics, nanostructures, Thermoelectric and Superconducting Materials.
