Department of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering

The Physics and Materials Science and Engineering department offers courses in Physics and Materials science to B.Tech. and M.Tech. students of ECE, CSE, IT and Biotech branches. The department has also started a M.Tech programme in Materials Science and Engineering in 2006. In the last few years the role of Materials has become very important with the emergence of nanomaterials, biomaterials, high temperature superconducting materials, carbon cluster compounds, polymers, plastics and advanced ceramics. This M.Tech. program is an interdisciplinary program aimed to impart advance level training in the specialized and emerging areas of Materials Science and Engineering and to fulfil the needs of industries and related R & D activities. It provides strong foundation in the fundamentals of structures, properties, processing and characterization of materials and will develop the ability and skill of students to design tailor made Materials and fabricate devices for specific technological applications. The department also has PhD programme in research areas of  Nanoscience and multifunctionalNanomaterials, Energy Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Perovskite Oxide Materials, Magnites, Metamaterials, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Photonics and Plasmonics, Quantum Optics and Quantum Information,Optical Sensors, Vibrational Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Solid State Ionics (Materials and Devices), Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (Spintronics), Laser Plasma Interaction, Charge Transfer Spectroscopy, Nanostructures, Thermoelectric and Superconducting Materials.

Research activities of the Department

Both experimental and theoretical research works are going on in the department. The experimental research is carried out on the synthesis, characterization and application of advanced materials (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, nanomaterials, organic, diluted semiconducting, organized assemblies, conducting polymers, bio-molecules).  The experimental research is supplemented by a strong theoretical group which works in different areas such as quantum optics, quantum information theory, spectroscopy, plasma physics, atomic, molecular and laser physics, nanostructures, Thermoelectric and Superconducting Materials.
